Government of Alberta invests in CCS knowledge sharing hub to advance carbon capture and storage projects across Canada and around the world

Hub initiative demonstrates leadership in climate action by identifying best practices and pathways to bring CCUS projects to life

Regina, Sask. and Calgary, Alta., April 27, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The world’s first open-source repository of knowledge and information about the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS/CCUS) projects will be established by the International CCS Knowledge Centre (Knowledge Centre) with foundational support from the Government of Alberta.

As a key action item included in Alberta’s Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan released April 19, 2023, the Government of Alberta is providing $3 million for the creation of a national CCS knowledge sharing hub that will be an important tool for Canada to meet its ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The mandate of the CCS knowledge sharing hub will be to collect and curate best practices and lessons learned from Canadian CCS projects past, present and future – drawing on knowledge from as many projects as possible from initial planning and feasibility studies, through to construction and ongoing operations – to enhance the success of CCS projects and promote continuous learning and improvement in CCS technology. Expansion of CCS is also a crucial step for creating and maintaining vital jobs in all heavy emitting sectors provincially and nationally in such areas as cement, iron and steel, power generation, petrochemicals, fertilizer, and oil and gas.

“Bringing large-scale CCS projects to life at the speed and scale that is required to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 requires unprecedented collaboration between industry, government, academia and other partners. The most effective way of reducing risk, lowering costs and improving performance of these multi-billion-dollar infrastructure projects is to share our proven expertise and apply the experience gained across heavy-emitting industries in order to build a sustainable future for all,” said James Millar, president and chief executive officer of the International CCS Knowledge Centre.

“We are very grateful to the Government of Alberta for stepping up with this critical support, allowing us to launch the CCS knowledge sharing hub and ensure lessons learned from dozens of CCS projects planned across Canada are documented and made available to anyone who can benefit from them,” Millar added. “I would be remiss in not singling out the strong leadership of Environment and Protected Areas Minister Sonya Savage in helping to ensure this initiative moves forward.”

“Carbon capture and storage is a critical part of Alberta’s path to achieving a net-zero economy. With projects such as the Quest CCS facility operated by Shell Canada, and the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line, we have led the world in developing CCUS facilities and proving the capability of this technology to drastically cut CO2 emissions from the industries that are the bedrock of our economy and are the lifeblood of our communities. We look forward to working with the Knowledge Centre to ensure that Alberta and Canada remain at the forefront and capture the enormous opportunities that are before us as the world undertakes an aggressive expansion of CCS to curb rising emissions and address climate change,” said Alberta’s Minister of Environment and Protected Areas Sonya Savage.

The CCS knowledge sharing hub will be developed and operated by the International CCS Knowledge Centre to assess and identify best practices and frameworks to get CCS projects to final investment decision. Key to the initiative’s long-term success will be coordination and proactive promotion of the sharing of knowledge on CCS gathered from companies large and small to ensure the timely and efficient transfer of CCS best practices across Alberta, Canada and the globe – outcomes where industry and government jointly benefit. Sharing critical information on the development of projects from study stage into operation will greatly increase the transfer of crucial learnings, leading to better outcomes and inevitably a greater level of CO2 emission reductions in Canada.

At a global level, the world can’t afford not to pursue large-scale CCS as a key tool for meeting international climate commitments. The International Energy Agency and the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have concluded a massive investment in large-scale CCS is required in order to achieve the emissions reductions needed to meet the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 2ºC. The IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Synthesis Report Summary for Policy Makers forecast that the cost of climate mitigation would increase by 138 per cent without the application of CCS technologies.

Background:

The International CCS Knowledge Centre provides independent consultation and technical advisory services on large-scale CCS projects around the world, including a number of Alberta companies pursuing CCS projects as part of their long-term sustainability plans, including:

  • Completing the feasibility study (with funding provided by Emissions Reduction Alberta) and supporting front-end engineering and design (FEED) planning for the world’s first full-scale CCS facility on a cement plant at Heidelberg Materials’ Edmonton plant.
  • Supporting early-stage engineering work on CCS projects planned by several members of the Pathways Alliance, a coalition of the six largest oil sands producers that is planning to invest more than $24 billion in CCS and other emissions reduction technologies by the end of the decade in order to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
  • Partnering with Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) to provide successful applicants of the ERA’s Carbon Capture Kickstart with up to 200 hours of support on their pre-construction design and engineering studies for carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) projects, with funding provided by ERA. The 11 successful projects represent an estimated $20 billion in capital expenditures in a wide range of industrial sectors, including power generation, cement, fertilizer, forest products and oil and gas.

About the International CCS Knowledge Centre
The International CCS Knowledge Centre is a non-profit organization founded in 2016 by BHP and SaskPower to advance large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects as a critical means of managing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving the world’s ambitious climate goals.

Dabiri-Erewa gives updates on 5,500 Nigerian students in troubled Sudan

The Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa says over 5,500 Nigerian schooling in war-torn Sudan are among the first batches of Nigerian citizens being evacuated from the troubled country.

Dabiri-Erewa made the disclosure at the weekly ministerial briefing organized by the Presidential Communications Team, on Thursday in Abuja.

According to her, there are over three million Nigerians residing in Sudan and efforts are being made to evacuate as much as possible from the country, if the war persists.

She, however, maintained that priority would be on children, students and women.

She said already, 13 buses had departed Sudan for Egyptian border Aswan, from where the returnees would be airlifted back to Nigeria.

She said: “We have some buses that have departed from the African International University in Khartoum, Sudan and as I speak, I think they are just about two hours away from Aswan in Cairo.

”Others departed from the Elrazi University also in Khartoum.

”All in all, 13 buses have departed for Aswan border in Egypt where they will be received by the Nigerian Ambassador there and the Director General of the National emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Habib Ahmed, who is already there with some officials.”

According to NIDCOM chairman, it is now time for Nigeria to focus more on Nigerians in Sudan and other parts of Africa because there are many of them residing in other African countries.

“When we were talking about Diaspora voting, some people were saying when we do that, it may not augur well. But we said no, we need to go to places like Sudan where we have millions of Nigerians who migrated there years ago and they have relationships and businesses there.

“The data is being worked on but I want to tell you categorically that by the time we finish the research we are doing, perhaps Sudan would be one of the largest areas where we have the largest concentration of Nigerians in diaspora.

”Everytime we focus on Europe, America and all that, it is time to focus on Africa and Africans in the Diaspora,” she said.

Dabiri-Erewa said as the evacuees return to Nigeria, they would be given some stipends to help them settle down before joining their families.

“NEMA will decide what would be given to the returnees because the funding is with the Ministry of Humanitarian affairs and Disaster Management. Usually is just a little amount.

”The last one, we gave them we evacuated people, we gave them $100. So, it depends on the budget they have.

“But we in NIDCOM give them recharge cards, SIM cards and sometimes phones. Usually they get $100 just to hold and these are students coming back to their families. They are not refugees, they have homes,” she said.

Speaker: Choose candidate with high moral standards, experience- Coalition

Coalition of Northern Front, South-West Professionals and Arewa Youth Groups has called on leadership of the All Progressives Congress(APC) to choose a Speaker hopeful with reputation and experience.

Mr Tijjani Abdulmumuni, President Arewa Youth Group, who spoke on behalf of the coalition, said the coalition was in support of a lawmaker from the South-East for the sake of equity.

He, however, said whoever the party would support from the region, should be someone with high moral standard and experience.

“We have watched with keen interest the number of actors contesting the position of the Speaker, especially from the South- East.

“In pursuance of balancing and preservation of Nigeria’s sanctity, we believe the leadership should be zoned to that region.

“However, in doing so, equity, justice and fairness should be applied.

“This is because whoever will possibly emerge speaker from the South-East becomes as much an issue of interest to the country, the APC and the South-East,”he said.

Abdulmumini, further said, whoever will be approved to contest for the position should be able to fit into the “shoes of the present Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila.”

According to him, Gbajabiamila has raised the bar of leadership, saying it is important to sustain the tempo.

“Gbajabiamila’s outing has made the choosing of a worthy successor all the more inevitable.

“So, any lowering of the present standard will speak of a relapse and an inexcusable let down for the country and the House.

“Therefore, among the criteria that should guide the House members in the choice they make is their contributions to the success of the party during the last election,”he said.

He further said, “we require not just men of impeccable character but also the best heads to salvage the country.”

“As experienced political players and stakeholders, we are all aware that the National Assembly is the ‘engine room’ of the success of any government.

“Not that alone, we must be reminded that the growth of our democracy owed much to quality of leadership we produce in our parliament.

“A party that fails to get the leadership of the National Assembly right may not witness major development.”

EU Allocates Additional Humanitarian Aid of 22 Mil Euros to Ethiopia

The EU announced today new funding of 22 million Euros (more than 1.2 billion Birr) in humanitarian aid for the most vulnerable people in Ethiopia.

The aid will be used to those suffering from the impact of conflict and displacement including refugees, drought and other climate-related hazards, and epidemics, according to a press release issued by the EU today.

This amount adds to the 60.5 million Euros announced earlier this year for Ethiopia, bringing the total of EU humanitarian funding support in Ethiopia to 82.5 million EUR thus far in 2023.

Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, said: “Against the backdrop of the widespread humanitarian needs in Ethiopia, the EU has mobilised this additional funding to continue supporting humanitarian organisations in the country scale up their emergency, life-saving assistance to the people in need.

The Commissioner stated that our humanitarian experts on the ground are constantly monitoring the situation and “we remain steadfast in our commitment to stand in solidarity with those in need in the country.”

The EU’s humanitarian funding in Ethiopia is helping address the high levels of food insecurity and malnutrition amongst the most vulnerable and provide access to protection support, primary health care, clean and safe water, sanitation and hygiene services, as well as education opportunities for children caught in humanitarian crises and who, as a result, have lost out on their schooling.

EU support in Ethiopia is implemented in a way that reinforces the Humanitarian-Development-Peace synergies in the country.

According to EU, the humanitarian needs in Ethiopia are massive, resulting from the two-year conflict in the north of country, a devastating and prolonged drought, large population displacements, as well as additional conflict hotspots and localized conflicts.

Additionally, more than 90,000 refugees have recently crossed into Ethiopia from Somalia, with Ethiopia now hosting now over 890,000 refugees.
