‘We need a representation of Namibian culture’: Langley

Director of the Namibia Championship of Performing Arts, Lomine Langley, said more traditional performers are needed to represent the country in Los Angeles, United States of America, for the World Championships of the Performing Arts.

In an interview with Nampa on Tuesday, Langley said that in her six years of directing the Namibian championships, only two traditional dance groups have participated, expressing hope there will be more traditional performers this year.

“We want the African groups, we want the traditional groups, we want the ‘Namibia’. That is what the world championships want. They want our culture,” said Langley.

The Namibian Championships of the Performing Arts, which is affiliated with the South African and World Championships of the Performing Arts, is set to take place on 21 and 22 July 2023.

Langley added that the Namibian championships will be the finals for Namibian performers and qualifiers for team Namibia will represent the country in Los Angeles at the World Championships of the Performing Arts next year.

She added that 10-year-old Salukazi Akwaake qualified for the World Championships in 2022 and will be leaving for Los Angeles in July for three weeks to represent the country.

Over 68 countries compete in the World Championships of the Performing Arts, said Langley, and she hopes that Namibia will stand out with more traditional and cultural groups this year.
