Foreign Ministry welcomes adoption of UNSC resolution for renewal of UNFICYP’s mandate

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the adoption of the UN Security Council resolution for the renewal of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

In a press release issued on Thursday, the Ministry notes that in its resolution, the UN Security Council reaffirms all its resolutions on Cyprus and reiterates the importance of achieving a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus issue within the agreed framework of a solution based on a bicommunal, bizonal federation, with political equality as defined in the relevant resolutions.

It adds that the Security Council also confirms its position regarding the status of the fenced off area of Famagusta in accordance with the relevant resolutions and the Presidential Declaration dated 23 July 2021, which condemns the announcements of the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot leaderships on further opening of part of the fenced off area.

The Foreign Ministry notes that the resolution expresses strong disappointment that the Turkish actions in the fenced off area have not been revoked.

The UN Security Council, taking into account the concurrence of the government of the Republic of Cyprus, proceeds with the renewal of the mandate of UNFICYP, pointing out that the status quo is not sustainable and reiterating the importance of implementing Confidence Building Measures, the Ministry’s press release ends.
