Bauchi State Launches Economic Summit to Enhance Investment and Growth

Lagos: Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has emphasized that genuine development should extend beyond statistics and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures, focusing instead on improving citizens' lives and creating a sustainable future. Mohammed, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Aminu Hammayo, delivered this message during the unveiling of the Bauchi State Economic and Investment Summit set for October 8 and October 9.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the summit, themed 'Rebuilding a Resilient Economy: Optimising Investment and Partnerships', is seen as a pivotal moment in establishing Bauchi as a prime investment location. The governor highlighted that economic growth should not be the ultimate goal; rather, investment decisions should prioritize the overall wellbeing of people and foster inclusive and sustainable prosperity.

The summit aims to present Bauchi's economic opportunities, encourage private sector involvement, and promote collaborations with both local and international investors. Mohammed underscored the importance of a partnership with Lagos, describing it as the heartbeat of Nigeria's economy, and expressed hope that the summit would draw new capital, generate employment, and turn Bauchi into a hub of shared prosperity.

Alhaji Mohammed Gamawa, the Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Investment, noted that Bauchi is positioning itself as a significant investment hub in sectors such as livestock, agriculture, solid minerals, ICT, and renewable energy. He pointed out the governor's initiative of establishing the Ministry of Livestock Development to enhance food security and expand production into exports.

Gamawa also mentioned that Bauchi has been chosen as a proposed site for a Special Oil and Gas Free Economic Zone in Kolmani, following hydrocarbon exploration by the NNPC, which is expected to enhance industrial connections and unlock new opportunities. He highlighted the state's abundant solid mineral resources, with ongoing discoveries broadening its mining potential.

Furthermore, he spoke of Bauchi's dynamic young population, robust ICT policies, renewable energy prospects, and infrastructure projects in markets, housing, and security, all of which create a favorable environment for investors. Gamawa assured that the state offers 'bankable PPPs' ensuring mutual benefits.

Mr. Aderemi Bolaji, a director in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, praised the state government's efforts to attract investment and described Bauchi as an 'investors' destination'. He urged the government to align its investment initiatives with federal economic reforms and encouraged potential investors to disregard negative narratives often spread by competitors.
