Second African-CARICOM Summit Commences in Addis Ababa with Key Leaders in Attendance


Addis ababa: Various Leaders of Caribbean and African nations are arriving in Addis Ababa to participate in the Second African-CARICOM Summit, which seeks to deepen cooperation between the African Union and the Caribbean Community.



According to Ethiopian News Agency, the Second African-CARICOM Summit is a landmark event aimed at deepening cooperation between the African Union (AU) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Among the arrivals was Angolan President Joo Louren§o, who was warmly received at Bole International Airport by Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Temotheos.



Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell also landed in the Ethiopian capital to take part in the historic summit. He was welcomed by Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, accompanied by the State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Berhanu Tsegaye. Additionally, Angola’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, T©te Ant³nio, arrived in Addis Ababa, where he was received by Ethiopia’s Minister of Tourism, Selamawit Kassa, along with other senior officials.



President Brahim Ghali of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic arrived this afternoon in Addis Ababa to participate in the Second Africa-CARICOM Summit. Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, he was warmly received by State Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Berhanu Tsegaye.



Early this morning, several other leaders arrived in Addis, including Prime Minister Gaston Alphonso Browne of Antigua and Barbuda, Prime Minister Philip Edward Davis of The Bahamas, and Prime Minister Dr. Ralph E. Gonsalves of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, as well as the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley.



The summit, bringing together heads of state, prime ministers, and senior officials, is expected to serve as a pivotal platform for enhancing political dialogue, boosting trade and investment, and fostering cultural and historical connections between Africa and the Caribbean. It also aims to coordinate joint positions on global challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, and reform of international institutions.



Convened on the third CARICOM-Africa Day, under the theme ‘Transcontinental Partnership in Pursuit of Reparatory Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations,’ the Summit aligns with the principles of the African Union (AU)-CARICOM Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on strengthening engagement and fostering linkages between CARICOM and Africa.



The Summit is expected to welcome the presidents of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, and Heads of the African and Caribbean Development Banks, as well as the Afreximbank. Representatives from the broader AU and UN systems, along with other strategic regional and global partners, including the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States; Permanent Forum of People of African Descent; civil society, and diaspora organizations, are also expected to attend.
