He declared that the dam marks the beginning of a ‘historic chapter’ for Ethiopia, noting that its completion is more than just a technical feat; it is a triumph of spirit and determination.
The Prime Minister underlined that the last phase of the dam was very challenging, necessitating resilience and sacrifice from all involved. He credited the will of the Almighty, the unyielding spirit of the people, the dedication of project workers, and the sacrifice of security forces for GERD’s success.
He emphasized that Ethiopia’s image, narrative, and geopolitical stature have changed, realizing the resurgence that ancestors dreamed of and this generation struggled for. Importantly, he stressed that the GERD is not the final destination but the starting point for a larger generational journey.
Expressing optimism for the New Year, Abiy urged citizens to face challenges head-on while reshaping their collective destiny. He noted that Ethiopia is rich in history, culture, religion, and natural resources for Africa and the world at large.
