Addis ababa: Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed hope that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the electricity and the power generated will be the beginning to show a brotherly, neighborly, and continental partnership. Speaking at the inauguration of GERD alongside African leaders, President Mohamud called on countries in the region to unite around the shared responsibility of managing, sharing, and benefiting from resources that sustain national prosperity.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, President Mohamud emphasized the significance of the gathering, stating, ‘It is a privilege to be here at a moment that brings together the people of this region around an issue of common importance: how we manage, share, and benefit from resources that sustain our nations’ prosperity.’ He highlighted that the event was not solely about the success of a singular project but rather a collective responsibility. The President noted that water and natural resources transcend borders, linking destinies and futures, and emphasized that regional development should be driven by cooperation, not competition.
President Mohamud conveyed optimism that the dam and the electricity it generates will exemplify a brotherly, neighborly, and continental partnership. He remarked, ‘When our people are united across borders, we can achieve what was once considered impossible. Upstream and downstream nations alike can only prosper when we act as a community.’
He concluded with a message of inclusivity and shared burden, asserting that no nation should feel excluded or bear the burden alone. The inauguration, he noted, serves as a reminder that true achievement lies in partnership, sustaining trust, and building unity for future generations. President Mohamud reiterated that shared challenges and sacrifices should pave the way for sharing resources that sustain life and prosperity.
