Samara: The Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA) has emphasized that Ethiopia’s survival and overall prosperity are intricately connected to the Red Sea and the Nile Basin. A conference titled ‘The Two Water Systems and Ethiopia’s Strategic Autonomy: Exploring the Nile – Red Sea Nexus and the Afar Region’s Strategic Role,’ organized by the IFA, the Defense War College, and Samara University, is currently being held in Samara.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Jafar Bediru, Executive Director of the Institute of Foreign Affairs, highlighted Ethiopia’s geopolitical vision as being fundamentally linked to the Red Sea and the Nile Basin. He stated that approaching the Red Sea expands the country’s power and vision. Jafar noted that for nearly three decades, discussions on the Red Sea within a geopolitical framework were considered unthinkable. However, the current government has ended this silence, promoting dialogue on issues critical to the country’s strategic independence.
Jafar explained that the conference aims to ensure Ethiopia’s comprehensive and sustained benefit by integrating the Red Sea and the Nile into the national agenda. He stressed the importance of sea access as a matter of identity, reconciliation, and historical continuity rather than luxury.
Mohamed Osman, President of Samara University, asserted that the forum is vital for fostering intellectual dialogue to safeguard Ethiopia’s national interests. He pointed out that Ethiopia’s aspiration for Red Sea access is founded on historical ties, geographical realities, and regional security considerations.
Commodore Tegegne Lata, Deputy Commander of the Ethiopian Navy for Combat Support Services, reiterated that Ethiopia’s national interests are closely linked to both the Nile and the Red Sea. He revealed that efforts are underway to reorganize the Ethiopian Navy into a modern, well-equipped, and capable force.
The forum is attended by senior government officials, including Fathi Mahdi, Deputy Chairperson of the House of Peoples’ Representatives’ Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs Standing Committee, along with officers of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces and invited guests.
