Authority Restates Commitment to Safeguarding Cultural Heritages of Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa: The Ethiopian Heritage Authority reiterated today its unwavering commitment to carefully oversee the development of the Addis Ababa Corridor Development Project with the primary objective of preserving the nation’s cultural heritage.

Addressing the media, Ethiopian Heritage Authority Director-General Abebaw Ayalew emphasized the authority’s steadfast dedication to the protection, restoration, and conservation of Addis Ababa’s priceless resources and heritage.

However, he argued that all localities and buildings in the capital cannot be designated as heritage. The focus is on preserving structures that exemplify the architectural and historical significance of the capital city.

The age of a building alone does not automatically render it to be eligible to a heritage status, the director-general elaborated, adding that the evaluation encompasses multiple aspects, including architectural style, construction techniques, external and internal appearance, design, and other pertinent factors.

Accord
ing to Abebaw, the authority, in close coordination with the city administration and relevant authorities, has been overseeing the Addis Ababa Corridor Development Project with the view to ensuring that heritages remain unharmed.

The director-general highlighted the importance of striking a harmonious balance between development and heritage protection, asserting that it is both feasible and advantageous to integrate the two.

At present, he said that the authority is conducting heritage registration based on “international best practices.”

Abebaw revealed that this ongoing process has identified that some previously registered sites do not meet the current heritage status criteria.

Sites registered before and meeting the requirements would retain their heritage status, while those not meeting the criteria would lose their heritage designation, it was learned.

Using a motor boat, a net and a hook, the young man indicated that: “We have started producing up to two quintals of fish per day and supplying the product to the market.”

Sharing his recent experience of
fishery at GERD, Itman revealed that the dam, which is being built collectively, has now been benefiting tremendous youths like himself.

GERD Cornerstone for Ethiopia’s Economic Dev’t, Regional Integration: Associate Prof. Yacob Arsano

Addis Ababa: The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has huge potential to become a cornerstone for both Ethiopian economic development and regional integration, Addis Ababa University Associate Professor Yacob Arsano told ENA.

The associate professor, who noted the lack of water resources and electricity plaguing most of Ethiopia’s neighboring countries, said Ethiopia’s hydropower generation is crucial in meeting the nation’s domestic energy needs.

Looking beyond Ethiopia’s borders, Yacob envisioned GERD as a bridge for regional economic cooperation.

The dam, he explained, could foster collaboration among countries by paving the way for lasting peace and sustainable development throughout the East Africa region.

Ethiopia’s abundant water resources, if harnessed effectively, could position the country as a hub for electricity distribution across Africa and the Middle East, the scholar elaborated.

The associate professor further contrasted this with the environmental concerns surrounding nuclear power,
a source of energy used by some developed nations.

According to him, Ethiopia’s focus on clean, renewable energy generation from GERD positions it to become a future leader in electricity supply for neighboring countries.

He emphasized the importance of Ethiopians working together to achieve this goal.

Recall that Ethiopia achieved four successful fillings of the GERD reservoir, which currently holds 42 billion cubic meters of water.

The dam’s two turbines are generating 750 megawatt, and construction is nearing completion.
